Updates!

Whew! So, 2013 is off to a rocking start here in my little kitchen studio. I looked up and suddenly it was almost April!

So, what have I been keeping so busy with, you ask? Well, aside from storyboarding, I've had some exciting projects going on! For starters, working with Visual Storyline, I illustrated some pop art posters that were on display at Paypal's booth at SXSW this year! You can check out some of the final images in Paypal's video from the event.

I also had the good fortune to connect with writer Robert Jeschonek, who found my work online and hired me on to do some artwork for an upcoming Kickstarter to launch his graphic novel, "Hell's Treasure". I'll be giving some sneak peeks here on the blog of some of the finished pages I did for the Kickstarter, but for now, here's the cover illustration!

26.2

On Sunday I will be running the LA Marathon! It's my first full marathon, so obviously I'm biting my nails at this point. So as I head off to begin carb loading, enjoy this fun drawing from yesterday, which goes out to all my runner friends who have inflicted this torture on themselves, or are planning to.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Last year, for Valentine's Day, I quite literally fled the country, and spent it safely in Rio de Janeiro, far away from this annual pink and red nightmare. That's sadly not an option this year. But, in honor of all the false starts, bad timing, and quietly longing from the other side of the drawing room, here's a Valentine's Day sketch with a more restrained, British sensibility, featuring Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley from "Downton Abbey".

Trust No One

The year is off to a busy, bumpy start, so I haven't spent as much time sketching as I'd like to. (I've done plenty of drawing, but it's all for work, and I can't share the fun projects with you guys just yet.) But as I've been recently rewatching one of my favorite TV shows, The X-Files, from the beginning, I found some time to do this quick sketch of Mulder and Scully.

The truth is out there!

There and Back Again

With a couple weeks left to go until the release of the first "Hobbit" movie, I'm starting to get excited. For all my fears of it being broken into a trilogy (how many zombies did Peter Jackson shoe-horn into THIS one to stretch it out for three movies?), this is an adaptation of my favorite book of all time, produced by a film cast and crew who made one of my favorite film trilogies of all time, so I'm choosing to go in optimistic.

"The Lord of the Rings" films, flaws and all, are very near and dear to me. I loved the books, of course, but the films came out at a time when I was in art school, studying to tell stories through my illustrations (at the time, I expected I would go into conceptual design...this was before I realized every illustrator my age wanted that job, and most of them were male and drew the way everyone expected of conceptual designers). And suddenly here was this series of art-rich movies to inspire me. So, it makes sense that as another story of Middle-earth is coming to the big screen, the excitement shows up in my sketchbook.

(I mean, I'm certainly too old to go to the premiere in costume this time... ;) )
